Your upgrade path

Drupal Migration

If you're on an end-of-life version, the fix is to migrate to a supported one — or to the platform that actually fits where your organization is headed. Here's what that involves, and how to get a clear plan.

Not all Drupal migrations are equal

The effort depends entirely on where you're starting:

From Drupal 7

Rebuild & migrate

Drupal 8 changed the architecture, so a Drupal 7 → 10/11 move means building a new site and migrating content with Drupal's Migrate framework. It's the biggest lift — and the best moment to rethink the site.

From Drupal 8 or 9

Managed update

These share an architecture with Drupal 10/11, so it's mostly module updates and deprecation cleanup — days to weeks, not a rebuild.

Re-platform entirely

WordPress, headless, SaaS

Sometimes the right answer isn't Drupal at all. If your needs have shifted, migration is the moment to move to a platform that fits — see Drupal vs. WordPress.

How a Drupal 7 to 10/11 migration works

  1. Audit — inventory content types, modules, integrations, and custom code to size the project.
  2. Rebuild — stand up a fresh Drupal 10/11 site with modern equivalents of your modules and a cleaned-up content model.
  3. Migrate content — move pages, media, users, and taxonomy with the Migrate framework, mapped from the old site.
  4. QA & launch — test, redirect old URLs to preserve SEO, and cut over.
Preserve your SEO in the move. A migration done without careful URL mapping and redirects can tank your search rankings. Done right, it's an opportunity to improve performance and rankings.

How long does it take?

A simple brochure site can migrate in a few weeks; a large, heavily customized platform can take several months. Migrations from Drupal 8 or 9 are much faster. The only way to know your number is an audit — which is exactly where we start.

Drupal migration: frequently asked questions

How do I upgrade from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10?

It's a rebuild-and-migrate: build a new Drupal 10/11 site and move content with the Migrate framework. Drupal 7's older architecture means it isn't an in-place update.

Is upgrading from Drupal 8 or 9 easier?

Much easier — those share an architecture with Drupal 10/11, so it's a managed update rather than a rebuild.

How long does a Drupal migration take?

Weeks for a simple site; months for a large, customized one. An audit gives you an accurate timeline.

Will migrating hurt my search rankings?

Not if it's done properly — with URL mapping and redirects, rankings are preserved and often improve thanks to better performance.
