When did Drupal 9 reach end of life?
Drupal 9 was released in June 2020 and reached end of life on November 1, 2023. Like Drupal 8, its lifespan was set by its dependencies — in this case Symfony 4 and CKEditor 4, which both reached end of life in late 2023. Drupal 9 is now unsupported.
Is Drupal 9 still supported?
No — community support ended on November 1, 2023. The expectation is to move to Drupal 10 (and then 11), which is a straightforward step from Drupal 9.
Upgrading from Drupal 9 is easy — there's little reason to wait
The Drupal 9 → 10 upgrade is deliberately painless. Because they share the same architecture, it's a minor update rather than a migration:
- Update contributed modules to their Drupal 10-compatible releases,
- Swap CKEditor 4 for CKEditor 5 and clear any remaining deprecations,
- Run the update — most sites move in days, not months.
If you're on Drupal 9, you're closer to safe than almost anyone — it's mostly a matter of scheduling the work.
