Drupal 7 End of Life

Drupal 7 is officially end of life. After January 5, 2025, the Drupal community no longer releases security patches for it — leaving every remaining Drupal 7 site increasingly exposed.

When did Drupal 7 reach end of life?

Drupal 7 was released in January 2011 and became one of the most widely deployed CMS versions in the world. Its end of life was extended several times — partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the sheer number of sites still on it — before finally landing on January 5, 2025. That date has now passed, and Drupal 7 is unsupported.

Drupal 7 is no longer patched. Any security vulnerability found from January 2025 onward will not be fixed by the Drupal Security Team. Automated bots actively scan the web for known, unpatched Drupal installations.

Is Drupal 7 still supported?

No. The official community support has ended. A small number of commercial vendors offer paid extended support that back-ports critical fixes, but this is a temporary safety net — it doesn't modernize your site, it costs money indefinitely, and it doesn't cover every module. The durable path is to migrate off Drupal 7.

What to upgrade Drupal 7 to

You should move to a supported version — Drupal 10 or Drupal 11. Important: upgrading from Drupal 7 is not a simple in-place update. Drupal 8 rebuilt the platform on the Symfony framework, so a Drupal 7 → 10 move is effectively a rebuild with a structured content migration. The good news is that Drupal's migration tooling is mature, and it's an opportunity to shed years of accumulated technical debt.

Drupal 7 EOL: frequently asked questions

When did Drupal 7 reach end of life?

January 5, 2025, after several extensions. It is now unsupported.

Is Drupal 7 still supported in 2026?

Not by the Drupal community. Only limited third-party paid extended support remains, which is a temporary measure rather than a fix.

What should I upgrade Drupal 7 to?

A supported version — Drupal 10 or 11. Because the architecture changed after Drupal 7, plan for a rebuild-and-migrate rather than an in-place upgrade.

How long does a Drupal 7 migration take?

It depends on site complexity — from a few weeks for a straightforward brochure site to several months for a large, heavily customized platform. The first step is an audit of your modules, content types, and integrations.
